Honda showcases next-gen hybrid and EV technologies, previews future of driving

Honda Motor has revealed new hybrid and electric vehicle (EV) technologies as part of its plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The announcement was made at the Honda Automotive Technology Workshop in Tokyo.

These new systems will power upcoming models launching worldwide in the late 2020s.

Honda introduced three main developments, a new hybrid platform for mid-size cars, a large-size hybrid system with a V6 engine, and production technologies for its next compact EV, the Super-ONE Prototype, first shown at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

The new hybrid platform, planned for use from 2027, is lighter, stronger, and modular. It uses 60% common parts across models, cutting costs and making production easier.

The platform is 90 kg lighter and offers better stability and handling with a new body rigidity system.

Honda also shared a Motion Management System and pitch control technology to improve balance and cornering, bringing smoother and more enjoyable driving in both hybrids and EVs.

For larger models, Honda developed a V6 hybrid system that offers over 30% better fuel efficiency and 10% faster acceleration than current petrol engines. It is mainly aimed at North American markets.

The highlight was the Super-ONE Prototype, a small electric car built for daily use. It has a Boost Mode with a simulated 7-speed transmission and Active Sound Control, giving the driver a sporty engine-like feel.

The production version will launch in Japan in 2026, followed by the U.K. and other Asian countries, under names like Super-N.

Honda says these new technologies combine clean energy, smart control, and fun driving, supporting its goal of zero traffic deaths and full carbon neutrality by 2050.
