Israel has been moving more of its soldiers, tanks, and equipment toward the Gaza Strip as it prepares for a major military push to take control of Gaza City, the largest city in the territory. The government and military have been saying that this next phase is part of their effort to dismantle armed groups there and push deeper into the area.

To get ready, Israel called up tens of thousands of reservist soldiers — people who normally aren’t on active duty but can be brought in during a crisis. Reports at one point said as many as about 60,000 reserve troops were being mobilized and sent to training and staging areas near the border and inside Gaza.

The army has also said it carried out more bombardments and operations around the outskirts of Gaza City, and has warned civilians to leave areas it considers to be “combat zones.”
