What happened
Israel’s military launched a major ground assault on Gaza City, saying the offensive had begun and using strong language like “Gaza is burning” to describe the intense bombardment. This follows weeks of airstrikes and buildup of troops around the area.
Thousands of civilians forced to flee
As the attack intensified, many Palestinians fled Gaza City on foot or in vehicles, carrying what they could as they left their homes behind. Some roads out of the city were filled with long lines of people trying to escape the fighting.
Heavy fighting and bombardment
Residents described seeing massive explosions and very heavy attacks from land, air, and sea — the most intense bombardment many have seen in years of conflict. The Israeli military said ground troops were entering deeper into Gaza City to confront the fighters it says remain there.

Health officials and witnesses reported that people were being killed and wounded by the strikes, and the violence has caused large destruction across parts of the city.
Why people are fleeing
